Professor Chelsing should not agree to the extension, unless she routinely does so for any student presenting at a professional conference. A mentor is often more aware of the trainee’s time constraints and personal or professional crises than a class instructor. This added knowledge and involvement in the trainee’s life, however, should not bias the mentor in his or her professional conduct as a faculty member.
