Case Study II - Discussion

Professor Jones should have spent more time talking to Rae before starting the research collaboration. She should have asked Rae what courses she was planning to take and how many hours she was working. Professor Jones should have considered all the demands on Rae's schedule and monitored her stress level more carefully. Many students consider an offer to join a research group an honor; they sometimes do not weigh carefully this opportunity against all their other responsibilities. They often don't realize how time consuming an independent study course can be. Research mentors have a responsibility to make sure that the demands of the project are not affecting the student's overall academic performance and personal obligations.
