Case Study I

Olga is a graduate student from Eastern Europe working with Professor Miller. After collaborating for about a year, Olga is well into her project and has generated a fair amount of data. Professor Miller is pleased with her progress. At the start of summer, when Professor Miller expects Olga to work on the research project on a full-time basis, Olga’s productivity suddenly drops. She doesn’t come to the lab for several days at a time and is slow in responding to Professor Miller’s requests for meetings. Olga gives Professor Miller no reasons for her behavior. Professor Miller starts to wonder whether Olga is a good fit for the graduate program and has enough motivation to complete the requirements for the degree.
