Dr. Saline and Monroe Manchester (a graduate student) are studying the growth rate of a particular prairie plant in an open field. They randomly selected ten circular plots in the field, and within each plot they studied the growth trends of all the individuals in their target species. Results for nine of the ten plots were similar, but the growth rates in the tenth were significantly less. Closer inspection of the tenth plot showed that the soil was a bit rockier there, perhaps from remnants of the foundation of a barn that had once stood near by.
