Professor Jackson has been supervising a student, Ann Lodi, for just over a year. Ms. Lodi is studying the influence of soil composition on the growth of a particular plant species. The project is funded in part by the National Science Foundation. Jackson and Lodi had just returned from giving an oral presentation on preliminary results at an ecology conference. Jackson proposed writing a journal article and asked to see Lodi's lab book. After some hesitation, she turned it over to him. Jackson discovered clear evidence that Lodi had been changing data to produce results that conformed better to their expectations. After Lodi admitted falsifying the data, Jackson told her that none of her previous work could be used now, whether or not it related directly to the set of data that had been falsified. She would need to start the project over again. Knowing this would delay her thesis project by a year, he took the opportunity for this to be a "teaching moment."
