Reminders…

Initiation of an inquiry means only that the allegation against an individual cannot be summarily dismissed as "frivolous, malicious, or false" and nothing more than that. Regardless of the reputation of the accused, the Eastern Michigan University MPO is obligated to proceed with the inquiry to determine whether there is a factual basis for continuing the investigation.

Inquiries and investigations are handled mostly by the Associate Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research and faculty, not by career investigators or legal experts. The intent is to provide a process that is fair to all parties. The process will not, however, operate with the precision of a courtroom.

An inquiry or investigation is not likely to be a pleasant process. It can serve, however, to clear the air by replacing rumor and innuendo with conclusions drawn from facts. The willingness of the University to pursue inquiries and investigations as needed demonstrates a commitment to maintaining high research standards. At the same time, the researcher is afforded some protection by the University policy that provides for sanctions against those filing frivolous, malicious, or false allegations and for efforts to be made "to restore the reputations of persons alleged to have been engaged in misconduct when allegations are not confirmed."
