If you are like the vast majority of those reading this module, you probably would not seriously consider committing research misconduct knowingly. Why, then, should you work through the module?
First, the term "research misconduct" is not yet sharply defined. What some might consider misconduct, others might not. It is useful to understand the definitions of research misconduct as a means of refining your own ethical standards and recognizing the ethical expectations at Eastern Michigan University.
Second, you may observe another individual acting in an inappropriate way. By understanding the community standards and the procedures for handling allegations, you will be in a better position to address these concerns as they arise.
Third, it may happen that someone alleges that you have engaged in research misconduct. Regardless of how unblemished your record is and how high your personal standards are, there is nothing to stop a disgruntled individual from making an allegation. By understanding the standards and procedures associated with research misconduct allegations, you can increase the chance that an unfounded allegation will be dismissed with little fanfare.
Fourth, if you are a faculty member or a graduate student, you may be supervising students who are new or relatively inexperienced researchers. Principles and guidelines you may take for granted will not necessarily be part of their framework. This module provides a structure for reviewing key concepts and procedures and for reinforcing that information for those you supervise.
