The requirements for complying with the array of federal laws and regulations are vast and complex, and the EMU Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee has been charged with the responsibility of carrying out a compliant animal-care program. Among their duties is implementing training required by the AWA and the Health Research Extension Act of 1985 for all who will be involved in the care and use of animals.
The type of training varies depending upon the level of involvement one has with the care and use of animals:
Tier One: All involved in research using animals
Tier Two: All handling animals and doing general procedures
Tier Three: All doing specialized procedures
The information provided in this module is not designed to address the specific training requirements of the AWA and the Health Research Extension Act of 1985. It is designed to provide a general overview of the issues surrounding the care and use of animals in research. Generally, Tier One training is conducted annually, and Tier Two and Three by special arrangement. Additional information about training can be obtained from Kenneth Rusiniak, Department of Psychology, and Faculty Chair of the IACUC at 487-1155 or ken.rusiniak@emich.edu.
